Loft Lover – Part 1

Hi. My name is Dave Lingholm and my wife, Gladys, and I decided to pick this particular loft in the city of Detroit for a couple of reasons. One is this huge skylight here. I mean it’s just something that you don’t find in a lot of places. Our old apartment was dark and faced the east, faced a building that was four stories high, so we didn’t get that much sunlight. So, it was one of the …..

first things that we saw, was the big skylight when we walked in. The other thing is just the the way a loft feels. It’s wide open. There aren’t walls, so you’re creating your living space the way you want to. So for us, we decided to put a bedroom over there that we walled off with some furniture from IKEA. We used that as a wall, so we’ve still got all the storage that we would need, but we could move it around if we ever wanted to. We’ve got roughly twenty-four hundred (2400) square feet which is pretty big.

Detroit’s a unique market when it comes to lofts. They’re very expensive in a lot of other U.S. cities. We were late adopters to the program. Typically, artist communities get into lofts quite a bit. And while we’ve got a pretty big art community here, they

just didn’t embrace it the way it happened in other markets. That’s changing a lot now. You get a lot more people in the art community who are coming in, who are looking for nice raw lofts like this with with the big brick, you know, the exposed brick, and the exposed beams and things like that. That’s what a lot of people are looking for now because it is a creative space. So, we’ve got enough room. When my wife’s ready to start her charcoal drawings again, she’s got the room to do it. I do a lot of writing for my job, a lot of content creation so it gives me a clear space that I can just go write. I can just wall myself off in a particular area and write. I don’t have to worry about being in a particular room or am I going to be in the light or anything like that. We’ve just got the space to create.
