Taking Tests – Part 4

Okay. This next question type says to match the words on the left with their definitions on the right. Write the letter of the correct definition on each line. So on the left I have four …

items here. Number 1 is apple, number 2 orange, number 3 wheat, number 4 broccoli. I simply have to match those with these definitions. So let’s go to number 1, apple. Is that a green vegetable? No. Is it a grain? No. Is it a citrus fruit? No. It is a fruit. Is it a fruit with red, yellow, or green skin? Yes. So my answer is D. I just have to write D on the line. So there’s my answer D. Again, I just have to be careful that I form the letter correctly so that the teacher can read it. Number 2 says orange. I just have to match that with one of the definitions on the right. And the answer is C, a citrus fruit, so I would just write that on the line. Some matching exercises ask you to draw a line, but this one doesn’t, so don’t draw a line. If you draw a line, you’ll get it wrong. This one says write the letter on the line.

Okay. Another test style is just a short answer. This says, “Give short answers to each of the following questions.” So a short answer means that you can write just one or two words. You can write short phrases. You do not have to write complete sentences. You do not have to write lengthy paragraphs. It just means give a few answers, a few phrases, or a few short sentences. So, the first one says, “What is a sentence?” I would just write a few words and phrases, maybe a group of words with a subject and a verb. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a period. Just something like that. I do not have to write anything really lengthy.

The last question type that I want to talk about is the essay question. This one says, “Answer the following question completely.” Now your teacher will tell you if this is an essay test and whether they want a lengthy answer, and this one is. The question here is “What is Impressionism?” Well, there are many things that I could say about this. But some things to keep in mind when answering an essay question are to first of all, write clearly. Write so that the teacher can read your writing. Also, write completely and write directly. Give your answer very directly and very clearly. If you kind of wander around the answer and don’t get to the direct answer until the very end of your essay, the teacher may mark it wrong. In this case, I might decide to give a definition, to give characteristics of Impressionism. I might decide to name a few important artists. There are different ways I can answer it. But, again, I want to be direct, and I want to write clearly and completely. Even if you don’t know the entire answer, you should at least give a little bit of information, and the teacher might give you partial credit.

So those are some typical test styles and ways of answering tests. I hope you do very, very well on your upcoming test. Good luck. Good-bye.
