Idioms
An idiom is an expression with a special meaning that is different from the meaning of the individual words in the expression. For example, it’s raining cats and dogs does not mean that cats and dogs are falling from the sky like rain. Check the idioms page for the real meaning.
to beat around the bush
Definition: to avoid talking about something
Example: Every time I ask her what happened, she just beats around the bush.
Explanation: Every time I ask her what happened, she talks about something else and she does not directly answer my question. She is trying to avoid answering my question.
Phrasal Verbs
A phrasal verb is a verb that is composed of more than one word. It is composed of a regular verb plus a particle like up, on, in, or off. When a particle is added to the regular verb, the meaning of the verb changes. For example, when the particle off is added to the verb drop, we get the phrasal verb drop off. The meaning of drop off is different from the meaning of drop. Drop off is a phrasal verb.
to act up
Definition: to misbehave
Example: Carl has been acting up in school so his teacher gave him extra homework.
Explanation: Carl has been misbehaving in school so his teacher gave him extra homework as punishment.
